What are welted shoes?

Goodyear welted shoes are particularly high-quality because the upper leather, insole, and outsole are connected by a leather welt seam. This construction makes the shoe more durable, repairable, and flexible than glued or machine-stitched models. The air chamber between the insole and outsole also provides a better foot climate and greater comfort. Compared to non-Goodyear welted shoes, they last longer, can be resoled multiple times, and adapt perfectly to the foot over time. Goodyear welted shoes are also known as "Goodyear Welted"—but at our brand, we call them "Goodyear Flex", because their special processing makes them even more flexible and comfortable.

Goodyear Flex

The term "Goodyear welted" originates from the machine-made manufacturing method for men's shoes patented by Charles Goodyear Junior in 1872. This method is also known as "welted." The two bottom seams of the shoes are sewn using special Goodyear machines: The Goodyear welt connects the upper leather to the leather welt and insole, while the second seam (welt) connects the leather welt to the outsole. This manufacturing method offers many advantages: Welted shoes are characterized by their exceptional durability and repairability. They also offer outstanding comfort because the space between the insole and outsole is filled with flexible cork that adapts perfectly to the wearer's foot shape.

After a lengthy development process, we've succeeded in creating a flexible version of a traditional Goodyear welted shoe: Goodyear Flex. This innovation allows for instant comfort and flexibility, making the shoes more comfortable right out of the box compared to the stiffer feel of simple Goodyear welted shoes.
